Spontaneous trip to Oslo
From Random trip to Oslo in Oslo, Norway on Aug 24 '07
So Friday it occurs to us that the following week we have only 1 course, and not until Tuesday, and therefore, we should go somewhere! Unfortunately, they don't have last minute cheap flights so after much investigation we end up picking Oslo. The train ride cost there cost a mere $40! It was, however, a 7 hour trip, that got us there at midnight. But it was fun nonetheless, and a beautiful trip through the mountains, even thought the skies were cloudy to start with. It got even better when they finally turned on the heat and I could take off all the clothes that I own that I had put on because I was freezing!
We had to stay in a hotel the first night because hostels were full. It was a really nice place and we turned on the TV just for the sake of it because I haven't seen one since mid-July. Sunday we went to the amusement park, and oh what a blast we had. It was a really nice day and they had some decent rollercoasters. We lived our childhood again as we went on the swing ride and bumper cars!!
Our hostel for the rest of the time was good enough. There was a Hungarian girl in our room for the whole time who had some interesting views and stories to share. We did a lot of sightseeing things for the rest of the time. There was a resistance museum that I found quite good. I knew nothing of Norway's part in WWII and barely knew that they even had a part at all! We checked out the palace, which was ho hum, and the parliament buildings. The Nobel Peace Centre was neat. Made sure to find L.B. Pearson in the mix and then ponder why there are no more Canadians on the list, and why Yasar Arafat is there...
There's a big ski jump there, so we checked it out. It was pretty much the same as Calgary's, so we were not as impressed. But after we went to this Vigeland sculpture park that was really something. It didn't look like it really belonged in Oslo. There were tons of statutes of the human life cycle.
The food in Oslo is more expensive than in Bergen, which makes me appreciate the prices here more! I have to say that I much prefer Bergen to Oslo, despite the rainy weather. Oslo's just another big city, while Bergen is smaller, and has a character that you can't find in a big city.
