The beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona
From A month out West in Sedona, United States on Jun 21 '08
I just want to thank you all for all your entries on this blog. I read them all and enjoy them very much, and I wish I could respond to all of them, but often times just writing this blog is all I have time for. Reception hasn't been too good the past couple nights, so the computer is very slow. But keep those comments coming!
The girls decided they wanted to sleep in late this morning, since we didn't have far to drive. So I got up and did laundry and read my Pathwork lectures, and still had to drag them out of bed at 9:30. Our first stop---Meteor Crater, which was just a few miles outside of good 'ole Winslow, Arizona--famous from the Eagles song...."standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, such a fine sight to see..." Yea Don Henley! Love them Eagles! Oh, but where was I? Meteor Crater, oh, yes. This was not on our itinerary until Melissa came home from school one day and she had studied it in school and her teacher said it was really neat and she wanted to check it out. And lo and behold it was right on our way, five miles off the interstate! What an interesting hole in the ground! Some 50,000 years ago a meteorite 150 feet wide slammed into this piece of desert and created an explosion equal to 1000 Hiroshima bombs, if you can imagine. There is a hole in the ground 3/4 mile wide and 550 feet deep. Not the biggest one of these in the world, but the best preserved due to the dry climate. It wasn't until around 1960 something that they even knew it was caused by a meteor. They thought it was caused by a volcano. Of course the Indians said all along it was a meteor. So that got me thinking, if we only have evidence of humans living in this area for 5 or 6 thousand years, how did the Indians know what caused this when us white people with all our science couldn't figure it out? I think it just goes to show you, sometimes knowing just doesnt come from the scientific mind. We think that is the only way we can know something, but it doesnt always work that way. And that is the philosopher and the astronomical geek coming out in me. I thought it was fascinating. I think the girls liked it too. We saw a short movie and then took a guided hike along the rim of this crater....1 mile round trip. (Had to get our hike in for the day). And yes, Sharon, I did bring my Arnica with me and that is the reason I haven't been complaining about my knees since Zion National Park. It works like a charm. Julia would be very proud of me!
Seaweed in Sedona...
Then we were back on the road and on our way to Sedona. We drove through Oak Creek Canyon, which was so, so beautiful I can't even begin to describe it. With our windows open driving through this red rock canyon with lots of trees you could smell the evergreen smell from inside the car. Then we arrived in Sedona and all I can say is that everyone who told me I had to go to Sedona and that I was just going to absolutely love it was right on target. Love it, Love it, Love it! I wish I had a couple more days here. The quaint little town with the funky little shops and restaurants, the wonderful hotel--just a Best Western, but it has a front door and a back door, which opens up to a shared terrace that is like a big patio with chairs and tables and it overlooks the red rock cliffs and it is just so relaxing to sit on that terrace and take in the view. I took a dip in the pool while the kids were messing with the computer, and it was heavenly. Then we went into town to check out the shops and that was fun for everyone. We found a great little vegetarian restaurant that had excellent food. I got my first taste of seaweed.....let's just say it will probably be my last taste of seaweed. It tastes like.......well, seaweed. So I ordered the salad without the seaweed and it was delicious.
And that was my day. Another good day. Hope you all are well. Sending lots of love and hugs to all of you!
Beth
