Wow, I am totally mixed up on days. I thought all day today it was only Friday. We spent most of the day at the Grand Canyon. Thank goodness we went down to the canyon last night to watch the sunset. Because of fires farther north and a small fire on the north rim, it was very hazy today and hard to see much. We took the Desert View highway and stopped several times along the way for different views. On the way back, we stopped at the new visitor’s center where there was a lot of information on the formation of the canyon and the thirteen different layers of rock found there. Because of rain (surprise, surprise), we had to cancel our hike. We did go to an evening program where one of the park rangers gave a little presentation and slide show. The theme was to be “Beautiful Canyon, Dangerous Canyon” and he did talk some on that but mostly presented his slide show with quotes from Shakespeare (Mrs. Schwiebert, you would have enjoyed this.)! He was a quirky guy from New Jersey and entertaining to adults. The kids didn’t find it as enjoyable as we hoped. We did find out that three to five people die every year from falling off the canyon. Ninety-five percent are male (hmm) between the ages of 18 and 26. Most deaths occur where there are guardrails present.

Tomorrow, we will take the Desert View highway back out toward Page, AZ. Hopefully, the haze won’t be as bad. After parking at the trailer park in Page, we will travel west to the Vermillion Cliff National Monument and the north rim.
