If you look at a map of Australia, Alice Springs and Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) look quite close together.  Believe me they are not.  It was a six hour drive on very straight roads - only two right turns on the entire journey.  However when I got there the sight of Uluru entirely lived up to everything I had anticipated.

As a tour group we spent one and a half days viewing and exploring the area around Uluru and Kata Tjuta, another nearby rock formation.  We were told some of the Dreamtime stories relating to Uluru and had a tour round the cultural centre which provided insights into the traditional Aborigional way of life which has existed for over 40 thousand years.  It has now been largely wiped out in just the last few generations causing huge social problems.

The Aboriginees are content to share their land but ask that visitors respect their sacred sites and the land that they have nurtured for such a long time.  I have seen Uluru at sunset and at dawn (as part of a helicopter flight over the area).  That was an experience - I've seen bigger insects out here thant the helicopter I went up in!

We also went to the Sounds of Silence dinner which is held in the outback with stunning views of Uluru.  After dark an astronomer talks about the constalations in the southern sky.  It was a very clear night and the number of visible stars was just overwhelming.

The visit to Uluru ends the Northern Territory part of my trip.  However I think I should at this point give a special mention to the lies that have been ever present thoughout this part of my journey.  I'm told that they can be a lot worse but they do seem to resist any repellant potion used.  I have perfected the Aussie salute - waving a hand vigourously in front of the face!

Fantastic - what a busy girl you've been. And I see the tan is coming on well: remember to slip, slap and slop (or whatever you are supposed to do). Lovely to share your train cabin - if only you'd paid the extra for deluxe they would have placed a choccie on your pillow..... As for the hot air trip, that must have been wonderful, serene and scary - it's enough to drive a white girl to drink. By the way you've dropped an "f" in the last paragraph - all very amusing to think there's no f in flies in Australia. I must get out more but then I couldn't match your journey and I am INSANELY JEALOUS! Keep us posted. Kx

okay, have seen piccie of you in front of the helicopter & it does look very very small. Is it just the angle of the camera or were you really as tall as the helicopter cabin?? Am sorry to hear of your woes re the insect repellent...at least Australia is far more 'developed' than Greece re lotions and potions if you happen to get stung!?? Remember to check the loo seat for nasty spiders when you are away from the big cities...!

Goodness Bonbin...you get around a bit don't you. All sounds so amazing. I wondered if you are going for some kind of record on modes of transport in as few days as possible. Train, hot air balloon, helicopter!, coach, walking, kangaroo, boat and on it goes. Makes me feel like dull deborah sitting here at home with one week after another seeming much the same - although Roundabout has had some good funding news so that's exciting... well I'm trying to keep up with the lord. I must go as I am off to pilates - do they do that in Australia? I'm tempted to make some joke about buzzing off but its bees that do that isn't it - not flies (flap flap). Take care lovely. Point taken about travel companions you can tell us your tales round a camp fire in Wales and point out all the constellations. Much love Debxxx by the way love the photos
