Sydney Mardis Gras

Back to Sydney.

We altered our itinerary to make sure we were in town to expereince the Sydney Mardis Gras. We'd been to the Mardis Gras in Manchester lots of times and always really enjoyed the good atmosphere, party spirit and tolerant people that are attracted to such an event. However, the Sydney is the original version and probably 3/4 times the size of the Manchester event.

We arrived back at the same hostel in Bondi (where transport to the Centre is easy) and met up with a Canadian guy who was travelling alone and wanted to join us to watch the parade through the City. After a morning on the beach (and more good surfing) we headed into the gay district of the City for late afternoon to get a good spot and have a few beers!

We met up with some nice people from Illawara (a few hours south of Sydney) who were good fun, but slightly annoying as they made sure they let us know every reason why life in Australia is far superior to that in Britain. (Its a typical passtime of Aussies Im sure!)

The parade lasted for nearly 3 hours and was started by Dykes on Bikes (Lezzers on Harley Davidsons carrying transvestites dressed as Vicky Pollard) and freatured a huge show from the Gay Bondi Beach Lifesavers and the Young Asian Mens Gay Troupe. it was no surprise that every other song was by Kylie Minogue!

A firework display ended the parade and we found our way around a few of Sydney and Bondi's late night bars!

Said goodbye to Sydney on Monday morning and had a 13 hour bus journey to Byron Bay in the North of New South Wales.
