El Calafate

(Amber)

We didn´t realize this was Valentine´s Day until we looked at the hiking schedule...and then we toasted our Nescafe cups and wished each other a happy day. We have since run errands, gotten money and bus tickets, had wine, coffee, and cheese while listening to Stevie Ray and Eric Clapton at a little pub that really knows what Gringos with sore knees crave, sat on a real couch (first since we left home!), and now plan to have a steak dinner. So it IS a happy Valentines day....which Matt swears is a scam and a "corporate holiday"....but that hasn´t stopped me from getting everything I want for one, all too short day.

Off to Puerto Natales, Chile tomorrow to prepare for a long hike in Torres del Paine....which is a hike deemed to be "one of the world´s classic treks."

A note on food....

Standard Argentinean food so far...

  • grilled meats, especially lamb and beef
  • pizza with large olives and tomatoes on top
  • great pastas and cream soups
  • hot dogs called panchos
  • empanadas filled with all kinds of things including beef, eggs, tuna, spinach, chocolate, etc...
  • great pastries, which include little biscuit things that are fried, rolled in sugar and stuffed with dried fruit
  • alfajores, or stuffed cookie sandwiches
  • ice cream
  • toasted sandwiches with ham and cheese or fried meat milanesa, etc...
  • coffee with milk called cafe cortado, beer, wine, and water with gas
  • breakfast is almost always Nescafe, bread, jelly, and Tang

In other words, we are eating just fine.

(Matt)

Happy Valentine´s Day! We finally ate at a fantastic Parrilla (rather than a mediocre one) tonight in El Calafate called Rick´s and had a bottle of wine from Mendoza, Argentina. It was super.
