Agrigento, Sicily
From Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Sicily, Italy Summer 2007 in Agrigento, Italy on Jul 30 '07
Traveling south down the Sicily coast by train, a short 2 hour ride takes us to the town of Agrigento. One visits Agrigento for its ancient past, not for its modern incarnation. Agrigento has seen many conquerors in its day, from the Romans to the Byzantines and Arabs. Agrigento has a remarkable series of Doric temples from the 5th century BC. Agrigentos amazing Valley of the Temples is one of he most memorable sights of the ancient world. The ruins are found under the beautiful Cobalt Blue Sicilian sky with the striking Teal Ocean in the background. The Temple of Concord ranks as one of the best preserved Greek temples in the world. The Temple of Hercules is one of the oldest dating from the 6th century BC. The Temple of Castor and Pollux represents the goddess of marriage and of the fertile earth. (hold your comments please) During the summer months one can visit during the festival of plays, operas and ballets staged here. Roaming through here (no pun intended), one can only say to himself, Self, I would love to have the remodeling contract here. LOL Please enjoy some pictures.
