"We just call it wind." the lady at the Route 66 musuem replied when my dad asked "Is this what you call prairie wind?" And windy it was, roaring wind, the kind that makes your car blow around like it's an iceskate on a particularly icy rink. Or somewhat close to that dramatic comparison.
This is where route 66 is alongside route 40, so it was our first taste of "The mother road." You can get your kicks started at the Route 66 Museum, which claims to be the national route 66 musuem. Don't get fooled by all of the other route 66 musuems, which are just for the state that they are in.
We just call it wind
The national museum is in Elk City, not too far from Oklahoma City. It's off of the business 40, on route 66. After seeing our official route 66 signs, we saw the largest sign for 66 that there probably is, located at the museum. We spent an hour walking around the old town that they recreated there, and at the car museum, farm equiptment museum and old time museum - all for 5 bucks! Very nostalgic for my dad. I particulary liked the windmills and farm machines.
We then got back on 40 and decided to stop in a nearby town for something to eat. What we found was a modern ghost town - we saw not one person and the wind just added to the chills we were getting. Where was everybody?

After Oklahoma, the wind continued and carried us all the way to Amarillo.
