Today we went to Dachu concentration camp, actually im writing this a week or so after it, but its still very fresh in the mind as it was very moving. Was the 2 of us, plus Christian who made the trip, the camp its self is about a small town just outside Munchen, about a 10 minute drive. This was the first concentration camp setup by Hilter and the nazis, initially just to home the unwanted from society. These included political opponents, those who couldnt work for almost any reason, pows from neighbouring countries, and of course jews. There was a sign over the door they entered by saying 'hard work shall set you free' of course that was rarely the case, as more than 1 out of 3 ppl that got sent here found the after life as the only way to be set free. The camp itself was in operation for 12 years, and saw the deaths of some 200,000+ prisoners. It was a large area, the museum part of which was located in the main building the staff used. The propergander show to outside and foriegn press was able to shade the truth easily enough, as increases in prisoners shot 'while escaping' and found 'hanged in their cells' was enough to cover the real happenings in here. The prisoners wld under go all kinds of punishments from standing at attention for hours and days on end to being strung up by the arms from trees and poles. Basically anyone who wasnt a inmate could hand out punishment, and they did. It was pretty much keep them scared enuf and you can do anything u want. Until health and pure numbers issues became a problem they has been buring the dead. In the early 40s the prisoners constructed what became a crematorium and bodies where burnt here, until they ran out of coal as it had to run 24x7, a few moving pictures included files of local farmers wheeling off hundreds of bodies to a mass grave, of which there where 2 near by containing over 3000 bodies. It was a truley moving day and the sheer insanity of it all touched all there im sure, even the annoying, loud seppos. there was a plague with words to the effect : this remains to ensure the likes of this can never occur again. Can only hope it remains true.
