We arrived back in Singapore yesterday and spent the day chilling, watching movies, enjoying the comforts of Raema's home cooked food, and potable water! We no longer have to be afraid of opening our mouths while in the shower. It is the little things in life...I am going to start a recipe book of Raema's meals as they have all been divine.

Scott has two full days before he returns home so he and I had a date today while Raema took the kids to a nearby water park. We took the 170 bus across the causeway over the Straits of Johor. This town is the antithesis of Singapore; a grungy city with no distinctive qualities. I should have read the travel book a bit better which refers to the town as 'a seedy little border town.' But, we wanted to cross the border and every city must have its gems right? Well, as far as we could tell, after 5 taxi rides to various areas, there were not any features that one could say are distinctly Malaysian. We did tour the Royal Abu Baker museum which is devoted to the Sultan who died in 1885 and his descendants. The museum was more focused on the playboy life style of the Sultans who had close ties with Britain than on the Malay culture. It was interesting but probably not worth the entry fee or trip across the border. The museum did have some french made crystal furniture circa 1880 which was quite fascinating.

We arrived back to Singapore early and will have dinner with neighbors Ron and Kate and their children Alex and Emily.

(Scott here:  The first picture is from Jahor..the rest are from Singapore's waterfront area).

Hey, don't knock Johar Bahru too much, some of the best printers in the world are manufactured right there!! Seriously, our engineers (and yours truly on a few occasions) make that trip over the causeway many times during the initial launch of a new printer, and you are right about that corner of Malaysia.....VERY working class and grubby. Downtown Singapore is a terrific place for strolling and having a beer on the waterfront....if you made it by the Shangri-La or the Swisshotel, those are the places I've stayed when in town.
