We moved from the city onto a town about an 8 hour drive away called Oaxaca (pronounced wa-hayk-a), it was a great town with a Zocalo in the centre and lots of little cafe´s. We spent a few days here, and even got in a couple of gym sessions at the local - Borris Gym.
The first night, Michael had bought with him 4 very nice bottles of wine from Israel where he works to make wines there. We had a very nice night at this restaurant which was on the edge of the Zocalo. There were lots of children that came up to us while we ate, wanting us to buy crafts they'd made. Suprisingly, at the end of the night, they wanted to charge us 40 quid for corkage.. extreme!
That night, we went out to a very mexican club, the guys had a dance with a few of the mexican chica´s of course. It was a fun night.
We took an hour cab ride out to some ruins in Mitla, `Mitla`meaning place of the dead. The cab ride cost us 20 pesos (or US$2) each - some definately value for money for an hour ride! Although it was a car pool cab - we had to fit 6 people in for the journey. What I liked most about this town is how close it came to how I imagined Mexico to be in my mind - brightly coloured, old stone buildings, quiet streets with a few locals about... it was nice.
We also visited Èl Tule`- home to the world`s largest tree.. apparently 500 people can fit under the shade of its branches. It was pretty cool to see. That night, Nath and I decided we were sick of eating out and used the hostel kitchen to do a very much missed home-cooked meal. The other boys went out that night.
The next day we went to `Monte Alban`, much larger ruins, a massive site in fact. It took us a couple of hours to walk around. They were truly impressive ruins as you'll see in the photos.
