Relaxing in Puerto Angel
From London to Durban via Latin America in Puerto Angel, Mexico on Aug 14 '07
We headed off from Puerto Escondido to Puerto Angel - another little beach side town...but this time with a lot less people!
If you know the Transkie in South Africa and know what Umtata looks like then you could well imagine Umtata by the sea! We came in bus taxi from the bus station and it really did look desolate and dirty. There were chickens and goats running around - side note : chickens mean roosters, roosters mean waking up very early. The roads were mostly muddy tracks...a truly great place!
And we loved it! We got there in the heat of the day. As fast as I was drinking water it was pouring out of my head...a lot. But we found a place to stay - Casa Arenal (sister to the casa we stayed at in Oaxaca). We checked out the local beaches...the fishermen sitting on the pier - the guidebook said they were catching tuna straight off the docks but I was rather dubious...more like small reef fish!
There was a game of beach football going on - similar to my days of touch rugby on the beach - as far into the water as you could go!
A very community driven town it seemed. We ate at this fantastic restaurant looking out over the bay that night...high up on the hill...with great views. Fresh fish set us back around US$4 and a beer was around US$1! I loved this place a lot!
The next day we headed off to a small beach around 20min away. Well 3 small coves with great snorkling. We could have signed up for the all day snorkling tour where they take you in a boat out to these beaches and provide the gear. We´ve got the gear and as it turned out the tours ended up on our little beach for most of the day - score a large saving!
But the snorkling was pretty darn good. Loads of coral and lots of bright fish. I tried catching some of them but it seems my flies don´t work for reef fish!
Since then the weather has been a little wet. So Phil and I have managed to master the backpacker game that Neil gave me! What a game - maybe its because I´ve been kicking Phils ass!
Later that night we caught another overnight bus to San Cristobol Dela Casas. I was super stoked to hear the movie was in English as we boarded...but the next movie was even better. "Croupier" - a Filmfour production with Spanish subtitles! Filmfour is alive and kicking in Latin America!
That made me happy.
We´re now in San Cristobol Dela Casa and will update once we´ve done something here. Oh - apart from Phil falling to the LADD - Latin American Disentry Diet! Right now she´s home trying to contain herself!
Until next time....
Hasta manana!
