OK so the “official” definition of Carnival sounded much better than my attempt to explain it. Therefore, “Officially it starts on the 11th of November at 11:11am and continues in a fairly low-key way for about three months before the Crazy Days which climax on Rosenmontag, the 42nd day before Easter. Carnival season is traditionally seen as a chance for people to go wild and let their hair down before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday.” That said the climax of Carnival, called Fasching in the southern region of Germany, began in Heidelberg with a giant parade. We were given the afternoon off from class in order to watch. It was hilarious. The costumes were from crazy to straight up bizarre. The most memorable experience for me, however, occurred when a man in a mask picked me up, carried me halfway down the street and threw me into this pseudo jail-cell that made up a float. Half freaked out and half dying of laughter, I then rode in the “jail” for a good five minutes, passing my friends on the street. They just died laughing when they saw me! That evening Skyler, Kate and I dressed up and went out to celebrate Fasching. All in all it was quite the experience!
