Falls, mosques, and freaks!
From Falls, mosques, and freaks! in Marrakech, Morocco on Oct 06 '02
Hey All!! We hope that everyone is doing great!!
Where do I begin!?!?! We have had a great week! The last entry was from Merrakesh. That seems so long ago!! Once we left there, we headed to the Atlas Mountains outside of Merrakesh, to a small town named Imil. It was raining.... Also, we expected the mountains to be more green, like with trees and everything. But there were only trees around the village stream. Any serious treking would be in the rain with no trees and a ton of rocks in the freezing cold. Jer and I are not that hard core so we drank a lot of Vodka/Fanta that night and woke up to get the first van (Lorry, as they called it; a van with about 15 people smashed inside)out of the village!
So, by lorry, gran taxi, bus, and gran taxi again, we made it to the Cascades Osowoud. This was one of our best stops in Morocco! The only problem being that somewhere along the way, Sarah Picked up Morocco belly...bummer! But Jer had a good couple of days! The falls where kinda funny the second day that we got there. There had been some rain in the mountains that feed the falls and the water was not flowing very clearly. As a matter of fact it looked like something out of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory...kinda like hot chocolate falling for 150 meters!!! But Jer was kind enough to force me out of the hotel to see it and it was still pretty damm amazing! Then the 3rd day, we actually made it out for a hike! The Falls had cleared up and the area was just about the best place to hike in...there were trees and everything! The next day we bummed a ride with these British guys and got all the way to Casablanca. The worst city that we may have ever seen...and that includes TJ. But there was one great thing about it, the Hassan II Mosque. This was one of the most amazing buildings that we have seen on the whole trip! But after the tour of one of the only Moroccan Mosques that a non-muslim can go into, we got out of Casa! We headed south to a city on the coast called El Jadida. A great place to just chill! There is an old Portuegese walled city and a lot of really friendly people! Actally, we met some of the most friendly people yet! In almost every other place, it seemed that there wer a lot of what Jer deemed 'Wilded-eyed-staring-freaks'. These were men that just sat and stared at you(for minutes on end), whether you are a man or woman. Didn't their Moms ever tell them that it is rude to stare!?! And here in El Jadida, the staring freaks are at a minimum. People would actually talk to ya to try and practice English and/or just to welcome you to their city!! They don't even try to get you to their 'brother's' carpet shop! Amazing!
Anyway, today we head up to the capital city of Rabat. It will be on a train so that means easy travel...I hope! Talk to ya later! Love, Sarah and Jeremy
