Another capital
From Uruguay for Christmas in Montevideo, Uruguay on Dec 18 '08
A 1 hour ferry and 2 hours bus journey took us to Montevideo, painless relly... but we were all rather tired from the previous evening. Nothing a quick nap wouldn´t cure in order to party all over again in this new capita thoughl!!
First impression of the capital: the taxi driver tries to rip us off by charging us bank holiday rate! It´s written ´gringos´ (=foreigners) all over our foreheads so the locals try to get as much out of us as possible... but I am no fool... we didn´t fall into their trap!
The hostal we booked ourselves in was very friendly and local girls were running the place. I got on well with one of them who even lent me some money as there were no cash points near the supermarket we walked to and I desperately needed to buy that hairdryer to style my new trendy fringe!! It´s funny but I didn´t care one bit what I looked like in the previous countries we have visited but now after spending 1 night in Buenos Aires where all the girls wear the latest fashion, with gorgeous hair and tan, I am much more conscious of my appearance. Are western developped countries more vain than less developped ones? Do we miss out on the most important things in life? Oh I do miss the kids in Sucre...
We went out that night at 3am after chatting and having a few drinks on the roof terrasse. People don´t go out until that time over here, it´s difficult to get used to the ryt actually and we end up sleeping all day! I do wonder how people manage to get up for work?... mind you, the average age in the club was probably 17 so it may explain it... I ended up climbing a barrier with some French travellers into an electronic outdoor party to avoid paying the entrance fee as we simply wanted to see what it was like. Not my cup of tea at all! So we only stayed to laugh at the young people dancing with their sunglasses on.
The 3 of us left the capital the following afternoon by bus for Punta del Este (a popular and upmarket holiday destination for local people) and then Punta del Diablo.
