The 'windy city' certainly lived up to its name when we arrived it was raining and blowing a gale for the first night. We stayed in a YHA hostel and it was overrun by school children which made it a bit noisy for us oldies. [ Also someone stole my crisps from the kitchen (pesky kids) - M].

We took a scenic drive out along the coast and stopped at the Chocolate Fish Cafe for lunch (a favourite haunt of the Lord of the Rings actors). We also went up by cable car to the Botanic Gardens and walked back down to the centre. We managed to squeeze in a visit to the museum, Te Papa. We only had a couple of hours there but wished we had longer as it was a wonderfully innovative, modern museum.
