Butre is a tiny fishing village on the coast of Ghana, and right beside it, across a little river, is Ellis Hideout, the place where backpackers and volunteers go to relax by the beach in Ghana. And this is where we were going... As usual, getting to our destination proved to be an experience in itself, with many tro-tros, taxis, scams, and misunderstandings. :)

So the next three days were spent relaxing on the beach, eating well, and playing in the ocean. The waves were not as strong as in Benin, but if they get you they throw you like a doll. I could walk for some 40 meters and still touch the ground, so that was also a nice difference from Benin. Some say this is the best beach on the Atlantic Coast.

Second wave... Splash!

We met a few nice people there. Three really courageous american girls, doing a Peace Corps internship, Sam, an English-Iraqi volunteer traveling the world, and of course the staff. With Sam we decided to rent kayaks and reach a little island a few hundreds meters away from the beach. The only obstacle was getting the kayak across the first three sets of waves, that easily reached 2 meters. Holding the kayak with one hand and the paddle with the other, we started towards the ocean... First wave... all good. Second wave... Splash! takes all of us underwater, and our kayaks rip from our hands and return on the beach. Back to start. First wave... all good. Second wave... ... good. Third wave, oh shit, we're too close, SPLASH, the kayak goes flying, so does the paddle, etc. The first one that got its act together was Marge, then me, and almost a half hour later Sam. Ego properly beaten, he then joined us on the little island. Conclusion: Sea kayaking rules!!

The resort was super cool, the staff very friendly, and the food excellent. The only thing was there was salty water in the showers, although not quite as salty as the ocean, so we always felt sticky, even after a shower.

hey! well you have a very nice beach then. although nobody 'let us hang out', we were staying at ellis hideout, and therefore had access to the beach.
