Taormina Sicily
From Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Sicily, Italy Summer 2007 in Taormina, Italy on Aug 11 '07
Greetings from Taormina. Taorminas beauty is uncontested and spectacular with pine trees and mansions crowning a cliff high above the sea. Sicily's best known resort. While Taormina has no beaches, the local beaches are a very steep climb downhill. Ok, well there is a Funicular which we took. Taormina retains much of its late midevil charm. The streets are lined with 5 star hotels cantilevering over the cliffs, boutiques and gellato shops and cafes. Its a mini Capri if you have ever been there. There is a bay on each side of Taromina which compliments the already fabulous views. The narrow alleys and streets are filled with summer tourists.
The Greek theater carved out of the hillside with panoramic views of the Sicilian coastline and Mt Etna, is the highlight. The theater hosts an international arts festival. Taormina is all about strolling along the flower decked streets and window shopping in its chic shops, or partaking in one of its many nearby beaches of sand and or pebbles down the steep mountain. Simply a beautiful mixture of grotto's, rocky coves and interesting beaches make this a chic resort town. I am lucky they allowed me to visit. LOL
Simply Beautiful and Unforgetable
The best known and most spectacular beach was Isola Bella. AKA The Beautiful Island. It was a small disconnected Island, and beach that you swam to or walked along the shallow rocks to. We were fortunate to get tickets to the Greek Theater and saw the ballet Romeo and Juliet under the stars. With the lighting, the performance, the music and the back drop of the lit up ocean and coast line as well as the the city lit up at night, it was simply breathtaking. It was unforgettable and fabulous.
We were also fortunate to see a shooting star overhead around midnight. It was actually a period of shooting stars that were predicted and we were lucky enough to see one. Please enjoy some pictures.
