Adventures in and around Cape Town
From Cape town to Addo in Cape Town, South Africa on Aug 16 '08
We arrived in Cape Town to blue skies and beautiful weather. The taxi journey from the airport was longer than expected and somewhat eye opening. There is a plethora of poverty both in and out the city but because of our lack of travelling we decided to stick to the safety of the waterfront.
We visited the Two Oceans Aquarium which we found very relaxing to sit around and watch the fish. The Spidercrabs on the otherhand were not to our liking. We decided one evening to go on a sunset cruise. This is highly recommended! It was beautiful and serene to see what I can only describe as a near perfect sunsett. After the trip we found a restaurant to eat in cose by to the waterfront. The warm weather and the carribean like music in the background made us think we were in Hawaii. The food was cheap and of good quality.
On Thursday we visited Aquillas nature reserve. The weather was cold and wet and there was a serious lack of animals. Our guide was so nervous of the driving conditions that the tour was rushed which didn't help. We were meant to do the tour by horseback but due to the weather we had to settle for the jeep. The lions are all enclosed so it wasn't like a real safari but more like a cheap zoo with a serious lack of animals. I really don't recoomend this as an activity.
We were meant to go to table mountain on the Friday, however, due to weather restraints it was closed. (It is worth planning ahead for this). Instead we went to the Diamond Factory which turned out to be better than expected. I went for the shopping but my husband really enjoyed the tour which was short but informative. The Diamond Factory puts on a taxi to and from your hotel so its safe and easy to get to.
One of the highlights of the first week was the tour of the Pennisula. This was done through Cape Extreme and worth every penny. We visited Duiker island, Kirstenbosch gardens, Boulders Bay, Cape Point, & stopped off at some amazing photo opportunities. The tour guide was helpful, friendly and very informative.
