We traveled to South Padre Island prior to the hurricane and interviewed the Black Dragon Pirate Queen AKA Christy McDonald ... here's our interview.

How did little Christy come to meet such a wicked fate as a Pirate

Queen? It’s an all too familiar story – went to Ringling

Brothers and Barnum and Bailey clown school, joined

the circus, worked for Disney and Cirque du Soleil,

then saw an ad for a Pirate ship taking on crew and

jumped onboard. Haven’t we heard that all too often?

Gulfscapes was fortunate to gain an audience with Her

Majesty, who submitted to her first interview in 300

years.

How do people end up as pirates?

Most were

press-ganged (forced) into service for the Royal Navy

where life was cruel. They jumped ship to be pirates

because the conditions were better and so was the pay.

And pirate ships were democratic. But if you didn’t

work, they’d throw you overboard.

Why are there 13 men on a dead man’s chest?

There were 14, but one killed the rest.

Who were your role models growing up?

Mary

Reed and Anne Bonny, the two most famous female

pirates. And who doesn’t love Blackbeard, the most

famous pirate of all?

What is the well dressed pirate wearing this season?

Anything she wants! I particularly like shiny

things. And fabric that is soft. And feathers. Oh, and jewels,

too! Especially sharp jewels for rings; they leave a

mark when you hit someone!

Do pirates get seasick?

No, only sick of the sea.

Give us enough grog and we’re all right.

How did you end up as Pirate Queen?

Because

I’m the most obnoxious. And

no one else wanted the job!

When do pirates retire?

Anytime they want. They can take their

share of the booty and leave.

What is a pirate’s life expectancy?

As my pirate in arms Skagger

“The Blood” MaGee says, “The cost of living is going up, the chance of

living is going down.”

This is good stuff. A South Padre Island Vacation would not be complete without an encounter. Unlike some other beach areas, SPI has the pirate history to support these types of activities. For all those looking to help South Padre after Dolly, this is one more reason why you should go on vacation here in the next few weeks. Good food, good prices, good fishing, and good people. Best, Sam Malone http://www.south-padre-island.net
