Birthday Girl
From Winter in Argentina in Montevideo, Uruguay on Aug 04 '06
I found myself taking the ferry over from Buenos Aires to Montevideo for my birthday. The Buquebus was a lot nicer then expected, the ride was fine. So we arrived in Montevideo after nightfall and took a five minute taxi ride that cost us a lot more then it should through the desolute streets of the city. It looked like everyone was hiding from a postnuclear war. There was nothing, absolutely nothing. The city looked like the Detroit of South America, in fact I think Detriot might even have more to offer. So we arrived at our hostel, which was less than stellar. In fact it was so crappy and smelly that we left. We left as fast as we could and checked ourselves into a Holiday Inn. Which would later become the saving grace of the trip. The weather was awful, grey and rainy. The restaurants are few and far between, the city isn't lively, shopping is far from stellar. Things close early, it's not a tourist friendly area. We walked around Montevideo soaking wet from the rain until to have our minds set on the fact that this city has nothing to offer. So happy birthday to me, I spent it in the Holiday Inn.
