Haleakala Crater
From Maui, HI in Maui, United States on Jun 13 '08
Lisa and her family went to a live stock show while we relaxed at the hotel. We were meeting at Haleakala Crater for sunset but we missed them somehow. This is a dormant volcano that hasn’t erupted in over 2000 years. It’s elevation is 10,000 ft. We drove through clouds to a clear peak. From the bottom of the crater it looks like it is raining up at the top but to our surprise it was clear as a bell. We saw a phenomena happen while we were up at the top. The clouds were coming up from the crater and when they got to our feet and the sun was behind us, we saw a rainbow. Not just a rainbow but we each had a rainbow encircling our shadow heads. I was so excited! I only happens when the sun is above the clouds but we are partly in the clouds.
