The Bali Bite

A short hop from Darwin and we arrived in Bali for our week of R&R. Checked into Febris resort in South Kuta Beach, pure luxury after backpacking for the last 4 months. Our balcony was bigger than most of the bedrooms we have had on the trip so far. And to top it off they threw in a free day at the spa; foot massages, facials, and full body massages. Nick's face was priceless when the little Balinese girl threw him a pair of black paper knickers to wear in the spa!!!! They called him Mr. Nick, and even offered him a shave! which he declined, hilarious!!!

Even though it's wet season, it doesn't deter all the aussies from holidaying here for New Years. Kuta was packed full of tourists from everywhere and surprisingly lots of Russians who were buying up the place down at the cheap markets!!

The weather was very overcast with alot of rain, but we still got to go up to Ubud to see the monkey forest and surrounding paddy fields. We hired a driver for the day to bring us to all the sights, so we went to Sanur beach, a place where they hand-make textiles and a silver factory shop. The monkey forest was the highlight, we had a great laugh seeing the monkeys attacking the Jap tourists who had foolishly bought too many bananas to feed them!

New Years celebrations were wild. The whole island seem to just jump on mopeds and speed around the streets, resulting in mayhem! We got dinner in a lovely Cuban place, and then rang in the new year in a bar on legian street. The street vendors all sell paper horns and hats so the noise was mental! Defo a New Years to remember, very glad we didn't have a moped when we saw the jam on the way home (see pics).

Highlights were that you can buy about 40 DVDs for 20 euro, beach dresses about 2 euro and t-shirts for a dollar each!

The local beer Bintang is delicious, and generally the food in restaurants was exceptional.

Lowlights of Bali defo the amount of bites we got, about 10 each every day, even wearing the repellant, problem is that its so humid the repellant only lasts a short while.

Oh yeah and Bali belly which we both got a touch of on the last day... Also they have a problem with rubbish disposal...too many tourists, not enough bins.

Loved our stay in Bali, but i'm sure it would be much nicer in dry season... Next stop Singapore....
