New Years at Sun Peaks
From Sun Peaks in Sun Peaks, Canada on Dec 26 '08
By Bryan Sun Peaks is a great resort in British Colombia, Canada. We had an absolutely great time on the trip, but unfortunately, both of us are still recovering from fairly major knee injuries. We went snowboarding for the first few days, but ended up taking it easy at the end of the trip. We didn't want to risk more injuries before heading to Asia
It was still a blast though. We went with Bryan's parents (Mick and Chris), Jennifer (his sister) and her boyfriend Michael, Jenn's friend Danielle and fiancee John for a total of eight of us in the cabin.
Have a snowy new years, we fon-did!
The village at the ski resort is quite quiet with some quaint qualities and situated at the base of three mountains.
New Years was a good time with a "torchlight parade" consisting of 190 skiiers coming down the mountain with torches (the fiery kind, not British flashlights). The firework show was fun, but a bit long for our tastes as Leslie's legs went numb. We took off at the end and almost ran back to the cabin.
One of the highlights had to be the fondue dinner, where we ate fondue at the top of the Sunburst lift (aka the bubble chair) before getting first tracks snowboarding down a run that had been groomed right before a few inches of snow fell. Unfortunately, Bryan's headlamp went out, so I was slow and had to stop to fix the headlamp. The trailing guide was on me and we were caught be the group behind us (yes, I was THAT guy).
Leslie improved by leaps and bounds in her snowboarding ability and did her "S-es" (or turns) for the majority of the trip.
All in all it was a great trip and we hope to do it again next year . . . . without the knee issues.
