History in Old San Juan (and good food)
From Puerto Rico - A different America - Sep 2008 in San Juan, United States on Aug 31 '08
There is so much to do in San Juan, but all visitors must make the pilgrimage to Old San Juan, its rich history and great food. After the driving around the island the day before, it was worth it to spend a day more on foot.
To start the day, we explored the resort a little more. We found a rain forest recreation and it housed a pond of fish, few birds and a lot of iguana. This provided some really good photo opportunities and got along a few shrieks from Ariana. There were also birds that I thought were Black Swans, maybe it was something else, but I enjoyed the thought.
A short drive from the Carib Hilton was San Juan. Parking here is quite easy to find and cheap, which is amazing for the number of tourists this place attracts. We ate at a cafe recommended by the guidebooks and the pastries were awesome. The food was so good that we decided to ignore the dead roach we found under our table.
Among the many options this place, the ladies started the day shopping. A surprising number of big brands have outlets in these narrow cobbled streets. Rohan and I spent that time sipping on great Sangria. Rain threatened, poured intermittently but never for too long.
We spotted the local version of Piazza de San Marco, a place to feed the pigeons. That is always fun, especially if you can get the birds to sit on your arm for a pic. The next destination is the San Juan Fort and while it is a bit of a walk up a hill, its not steep and the beautiful setting makes it a fun walk.
