We traveled A LOT to get to the little island of KoLanta. 10 hr bus, 1 tuk tuk ride, another 3 hour bus, 2 ferries and a taxi! Whew! We found a hotel when we arrived called the Lanta Emerald and it was lovely. We went for a walk on the beach to get us settled and then had dinner at the Ting-tong bar at our hotel. The hotel also put on music and fire shows each night which were great.

We rented a scooter from our hotel and set about exploring the island, we got a wee bit lost, mainly b/c all the road signs are in Thai, but we had a great day out on the road. Mark got a pretty bad sunburn from having his arms in the same position on the bike, despite having 30 SPF sunscreen on – but the tropical sun is a lot harsher so we bought some 50 SPF after that.

We pretty much managed to cover the entire island - minus the national park, which we just went to the edge of, the roads were very dirt and very dodgy so we decided to give it a miss.

The main island is 6km wide and over 30km long, located approximately 70km from Krabi. The island has 9 attractive white sandy beaches, splendid scenery; coastlines have more than 70 small islands and plenty with forest, coral reefs and under water life. The geography of the island is typically mangroves; coral rimmed beaches; and rugged tree covered hills...and the sunsets.....oooo so nice!  I took so many sunset photos!  They were amazing!

Ko Lanta was hit by the tsunami in December 2004, which killed 20 people, but virtually all businesses are now operating normally again. There are tsunami signs everywhere on the island outlining evacuation routes etc.  It wasn't as badly damaged as alot of the other islands in the area.

We pretty much have had Pad Thai everyday since we have been here – I want other things but the pad thai is just so good! yum yum

Long story short - we loved Ko Lanta.  Would defo recommend coming here!

I think you've finally found a place in your travels where there are no monkeys - well done! Although I was enjoying many of the monkey stories... I love Pad Thai as well, so jealous! When I got back to Glasgow I had some in a Thai restaurant and it was awful! Enjoy it while you can, it's cheap and amazing!
