It was very foggy this morning. We drove east out of Superior toward Three Rivers, Wisconsin. The first part of the trip followed Lake Superior’s Southern Shore. After we drove about an hour the fog lifted and it was beautiful. We entered Bayfield which is a lazy little town with a lovely harbor. It is located across the Lake from the Apostle Islands. It was a beautiful location and we enjoyed a nice walk around town. Continued along the Lake for another 50 miles or so then headed south. The colors were beautiful – trees are beginning to turn. Around every curve there is another lake – I’ve never seen so many. This is a popular area in summer and winter – many snowmobile areas. Ended the day at Three Lakes, Wisconsin where our camp spot is right along a beautiful lake.

The next day we drove into Green Bay, Wisconsin, which is located on Lake Michigan. We arrived about noon and decided to stay in DePere which is just South of the City. It was misty and not a very pretty day. After getting set up we drove into Green Bay and stopped at Lambeau Field (where the Packers play) to visit the Packer’s Hall of Fame. It was really interesting and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s amazing to me that such a small city has an NFL team, not to mention one with such a history. Green Bay is an interesting city, very old buildings, many industrial plants, especially along the Fox River which runs directly through the city. We enjoyed our drive around town.

Today, Sunday, we got up early and headed into Door County. Door County is located at the tip of a peninsula which extends into Lake Michigan. It is sometimes referred to as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest” and it certainly is similar, although I think prettier. From Green Bay to Northpoint (at the end of the peninsula) is approximately 100 miles and we went all the way to the end and back (obviously an all day trip). Door County begins at Sturgeon Bay which boasts one of the biggest shipyards in the nation, producing vessels as varied as naval ships, racing craft and luxury yachts. We stopped at Whitefish Dunes State Park which has shores lined with sand dunes that can be seen from space. Cave Point Park was also very beautiful. The further North you go the more charming it becomes. There are beautiful harbors and quaint towns. We stopped by an orchard store and bought some honey crisp apples, Wisconsin cheese and sausage. This is a big cherry growing area and loaded with cherries in the summer. At the end of the peninsula a ferry runs to Washington Island – we did not take that trip. Our favorite town was Sister Bay – it has a beautiful park along the harbor. Also there was a Swedish restaurant with a grass roof and there were goats grazing on it. We stopped to eat in Sturgeon Bay at a restaurant called the Pudgy Seagull – exactly what we both felt like when we left! Door County was a wonderful place to visit.
