So yes... this place of eerieness....

Port Maquarie is real weird. It was deserted, entirely quiet. The roads are HUUUUGEE (a demonstration of the SPACE to PEOPLE ratio in Australia) and were empty. It's like one of those strange little towns where something not quite right is afoot in a David Lynch movie. (Even more so than the blue mountains being like Twin Peaks.) It seemed full of american style diners, equally as deserted, except for the flies. There were lots of those little buggers.

We went to the Koala Hospital where sick koalas are treated. They were cute enough i suppose.

In the evening we had dinner at the Hog's Breath. Its a pretty cool aussie chain. A bit like a cowboy saloon/grill restaurant/sleazy bar. I had a roast cos it was sunday. And boy was it good.

We returned to our YHA (which in all honesty was little more than a bungalow shack pathetically attempting to look cheerful with a depressing coat of peeling yellow paint) and ate cookies with glasses of milk in front of the sickening 'blue crush', a girly movie AND a surfing movie, never a good idea.

Am i complaining a lot? I promise i mean not to, i'm having a wonderful time.

The next day we had a couple of hours before our bus, so wandered down to the beach and along the painted rocks of Port Macquarie. Sea paddling was pleasant. We saw a pelican. That was pretty much it.

So, i wouldn't exactly recommend this area to anyone travelling up through oz, unless you are writing a particularly scary horror novel which needs both setting and solitude.
