Left Santiago Monday at 11.05pm after using the lounge facilities at the airport, very good wine, champagne and food. Flight 13 hours but arrived Wednesday at 4.10am. Collected a car from Hertz a Ford Falcon, then left Auckland for the north. Arrived in a place called Paihia, Bay of Islands. Thursday went on two boat trips one on a boat that travelled at 60mph to the hole in the rock and cathedral cave. In the afternoon we went on a trip to view and swim with dolphins. In the evening we ate at the ex-servicemans club, drinks and food very cheap. On Friday we left Paihia and went to the Waitangi treaty grounds where in 1840 the British signed an agreement to govern NZ with the Maori people. We then travelled south back towards Auckland passing many beautiful beaches. We stayed in a motel at Warkworth and ate in the RSA Club. On Saturday we drove to Auckland stopping at the suburban beaches. We then found our hotel The Langham we had to wait three hours for the room we then went on a ferry across Auckland harbour to Devonport passing QM2 which was in harbour. Sunday we departed Auckland for Sydney at 9.00am.

12th March. Having cracked the system I am making a few retrospective comments. We spent 5 days in Pahia back in 1997 and did the "Hole in the Rock" in calm condidtions. Did you see the Maori Princess on the other side? We also did a trip up to Cape Rienga and back via 90 mile beach, although it is not 90 miles long. Did you know that Waitangi Day (6th February) is the day that we think that the Scout Troop was founded? You will have to go back and do New Zealand properly when you are retired!
