Driving in Tassie is all up and down on windy and often narrow roads. This is especially the case on the west coast.
We arrived in Strahan tired from the journey. We continued further down a sandy road to Ocean Beach where there are lots of places to bush camp. It was a nice spot but we turned back as, at this early stage in our trip, bush camping seemed risky. So back to Strahan to a caravan park we went.
We did a seaplane trip from Macquarie Harbour to the Wild Rivers National Park. We set off over the coast and then flew over Sarah Island (convict prison) and up the winding and picturesque Franklin and Gordon Rivers. It was a little 6 seater and the landing and take-off from the narrow river was scary. We did a short bushwalk at the site of the major confrontation between the “greens” and government. The girls felt a bit queasy and M fell asleep from the hum of the engine on the return trip..
The next day we packed up and had a look around Queenstown, which is set amidst a barren mountain landscape and is an old mining town in decay after its glory years in the late 1800s.
