Baptismal Showers
From In the shadow of Teotihuacan in Acambaro, Mexico on Dec 31 '06
If you wish to come to Mexico avoid the month of July unless you do not mind the thunderous showers that are typical this time of the year.
When I arrived in MExico City by plane, around 5:30 in the evening, the weather was overcast. I caught a bus (Primera Plus for 235 pesos or $23 US) from the airport to Queretaro some three hours away. During the final hour of this trip hail was striking the roof of the bus with incredible ferocity. Upon arriving at the Queretaro bus station I was picked up by my Uncle Manuel who drove me the final leg of my trip to Acambaro. Unfortunately there is no direct bus from Mexico City airport to Acambaro.
Heaven´s rains apparently can only do so much
My sister, her husband, Ruben, and three kids, Cassie, Gabriel and Julia, arrived one week earlier. She told me that it had been raining in Acambaro every night since her arrival with the strongest down pours occurring between the hours of 6-9 pm. The night before I arrived in Acambaro several of the city streets were flooded about five inches or more. Luckily the street that we are living on was spared this infliction.
After each downpour the skies are cleansed of all the pollutants thrown up in the air from vehicles, factory smoke stacks and outdoor firepits. (The signs of environmental destruction are unavoidable to one´s senses.) Similarly, the streets, at least those that are paved, are temporarily cleansed of their own indiscretions. Unpaved streets, however, only become worse with mud and rock replacing dirt and trash. Heaven´s rains apparently can only do so much. The rest is up to us.
