Our first real day in Budapest after arriving in the afternoon/evening the day before. Having already had a stroll in Budapest and shown Mum Heroes Square at night it was time to head off and show Mum where she had been the night before. After another short trip to Heroes Square it was time to show Mum the very little-well-known Roman Amphitheatre in Budapest near Florian ter.

The Romans decided to build a settlement on this part of the Danube to keep the local tribes in check, founding a city called Aquincum, along their border lines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquincum. Consequently, a military and civilian theatres were built and this one at Florian Ter is the military one. Mindboggling to see the ruins of an amphitheatre in the middle of communist style buildings and major roadways without a single sign stating who/what/where/how of this wonderful ruins.

Szentendre town on the Danube

Back in the car and off again following the old Roman road out of town towards our next destination Szentendre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szentendre

Szentendre (Saint Andrew) is a picturesque cobblestoned town by the Danube that has embraced the tourism trade in all its glory. Formerly a haven for religiously persecuted peoples (predominantly Serbs) during the 1500's, Croats, Slovaks, Germans and Greeks also settled here creating a cosmpolitan meld of cultures and hence arts.

We had a nice walk through the small town, saw most of the sights and then headed off to Visegrad.
