Another scorcher - 29c and we both frazzled! We took the subway to City Hall and had a look around the municipal buildings and the Woolworths Building. In our wisdom we then decided that we'd walk over the Brooklyn Bridge (appox. 1 mile) in the midday sun! The bridge spans across the East River which seperates Manhattan from Brooklyn and the views of the Manhattan skyline were absolutely amazing, as if they buildings were super imposed in front of you.As you can imagine the camera went into overtime! Once of the bridge we walked into Brooklyn Heights which is the area directly opposite the Manhattan financial district and sat on a bench overlooking the east river and had some lunch. Having walked back over the bridge we went to Battery Park with the Statue of Liberty in the background and lay down in the shade before refuelling with ice cream! We then walked to Ground Zero but this time went into a public building which overlooks the site and read about 9/11 and how the area is now being redeveloped. We viewed Ground Zero from the second floor observation area - you can't even begin to imagine those two buildings actually standing there or even begin to understand the sheer size of them when you see with your own eyes the other skyscrapers they dwarfed. Even now, it is still quite an emotional thing to read about and see first hand. After we went to the dock area and saw some massive boats (157ft +) and looked across at New Jersey. We then jumped on the subway to Times Square to get some dinner and then on to Union Square where we bought some proper his and hers hiking sandals. All the way back to the hostel we just whinged to each other about how burnt we both were!
