Paris to Interlarken
From From UK to Euro in Interlaken, Switzerland on Feb 19 '06
The drive from Paris to Interlaken began with a lot of traffic, well what can you expect for Monday morning? We drove through the French countryside to the Swiss border where we bought lots of chocolate, just because that's what you do in Switzerland...we continued through the Swiss landscape, which was amazing, and made it to Interlaken in the dark. Here our tour guide taught us some German, and booked tickets for the train ride to Jungfraujoch for the next day. Our hotel was great! Clean, tidy, spacious, just what you need at the end of a long day on a bus. After a bit of souvenir shopping we went to Bebbie's restaurant just down the street from the hotel. This was a very amusing experience - if you go to Interlaken, you have to go to this place!
The next day most of the group boarded the train for the Jungfraujoch, which is a glacier and the highest place in Europe a person can go without mountaineering gear. There was a lot of snow on the way, which made for some awesome pictures, and for a very cold trip. At the top, we walked around the viewing platform where the glacier dropped away beneath our feet, and where the temperature was -17.5 degrees celcius! We also went to the Ice Palace, which has been carved out of the glacier. On the way back to Interlaken we stopped off at Lauterbrunnen, where the beer is served with 15 minutes of internet access. There wasn't much else to do in Lauterbrunnen, so we took the train back to Interlaken, before having dinner at Bebbie's again, and then going to "Buddie's" Pub for drinks and to watch the soccer - what a bunch of tourists!
