We left Honduras behind on yet another first class buss and crossed the border into Nicaragua.  The local rum in the duty free shop is only $5 and apparently it is great stuff!  Over 8 hours travelling this time so it was a long day and the last part was travelling from the capital city of Nicaragua, Managua by a collectivo bus which involved some serious organisation to get us all a seat.  We had to let the first bus go so we were first in the queue and then when the next one came in half of us had to go on and forcibly get seats whilst the rest of us got the bags up to the guy on the roof.  Unfortunately some of the locals thought they could push on first even though they weren't in the queue and there was a bit of a face off between a "beast of a woman" and Sudha and ended up with her biting Sudha on the arm!  Better get that rabies jab!!

Arrived in Granada which turned out to be one of the friendliest cities I had been to.  Every time we got lost someone stopped us and asked if we needed directions.  We spent half a day walking around the town's market but decided to pass on the raw meat stall considering it was about 30 degrees even in the shade.

One evening we dined care of a local charity giving jobs to local street kids and it was the best meal I have had since I have been away.  The kids were all fantastic and shared their life stories with us after dinner which gave us a real insight into what it is like growing up in a country as poor as Nicaragua.

The next day we checked out the local Masaya Volcano which is still active and was a bit smelly to say the least!  They warn you to park your car facing out of the carpark in case you need to make a quick dash for it!  We also saw Lago de Apoyo which was really pretty and then spent the rest of the afternoon going crazy at the craft market stalls.  I really shouldn't buy any more jewellery but it is so hard to resist!

Hey Sal Sorry i didn't manage to mail you on your birthday - was in wilds of Africa and couldn't find anywhere to contact you from - only internet we could find anywhere was attached to a faulty generator which shut down every 2 minutes, and eventually gave up before we damaged something, after we lost the race against the clock for the fifth time! Anyway, Happy Birthday belatedly. Am loving reading about your trip :) Miss you, Ellie
