Journal Entry: Sunday, September 29,2002

Today we went to Teotihuacan, the mysterious, abandoned “City of the Gods.” It is about a half hour to the NW of Mexico City and about a two hour bus ride from Cuernavaca. On the way we stopped at a shop or “tienda” that sold obsidian and learned a little about the maguey plant. The Teotihuacanos used the shiny, black volcanic rock for many things such as knife blades and for decorating there temples, as did many of the cultures of Mesoamerica (or what Mexico and Central America were called before the Spanish conquest.) Here you see the maguey plant.
