Kota Bharu
From February - May 2007 in Kota Bharu, Malaysia on Mar 31 '07
We were so sad to leave the Perhentian Islands... It was idyllic but we are excited to be on the move again. Kota Bharu is quite a large town with a distinct Islamic influence. It is the capital of the state of Kelantan and, as the 1st of April was the Sultan's birthday, Monday 2nd April was a public holiday. We saw sultan's convoy of police cars and limousines with tinted windows, but didn't manage to catch a glimpse of the sultan himself. Kota Bharu's architecture is modern and rather uninspiring but it's an interesting place and we had a nice time visiting the Gelanggang Seni Cultural Centre. We watched displays of martial arts and traditional music. Dean even had a go on one of the (109kg!) drums. KB is our last stop in Malaysia, before heading North to Thailand.
