Clovelly is without a doubt the worst ‘attraction’ we have paid to see in the UK. It is a ‘privately owned’ town on the edge of a very steep cliff leading down to the sea. As its privately owned the town charge you to get in, £5 per adult.
For this you get to walk down through a not particularly scenic town with free entry into a ‘fishermans house’ (think old house decorated by your gran). After a serious climb down you get to a small harbour with an overpriced restaurant on an ugly rocky beach. Just to make sure you are enjoying your stay they were remodelling the beach with a bulldozer the day we were there (a Sunday). The ONLY redeeming feature is a pretty waterfall on the beach.
I would not recommend this place if it was free – paying a tenner to get in is robbery!

On leaving we drove through Exmoor, which although geographically close, is nothing like Dartmoor. We also went down (and up) our biggest gradient in the camping car of 25%, on the second descent into Porlock we were treated to the smell of cooked brake pads – not good.
Dave.
