Laguna De Apoyo

We made some time for a little sun, fun and relaxation by heading to Laguna De Apoyo, a small freshwater crater lake on the outskirts of Granada. A half hour drive out of the city the lake is formed by run off water that has filled the crater. We spent the day lounging in the sun, working on our tans, floating on inner tubes and diving off the floating dock. A little beer to quench our thirst, fruity rum drinks, hammocks to lie in and we were pretty much settled in for the day.
The lake was unlike any other freshwater lake we have seen. It was surrounded by tree covered caverns, so it was like you were swimming in the middle of a little lagoon. The water was so warm it was like taking a lukewarm bath. The lake was something like 23 000 years old and as rumour has it if you were to scuba dive in it, the walls of the caverns have petroglyphs on them, aka, rock formations carved in the shapes of animals and birds. It turned out to be pretty relaxing, and rated high on our list of most favorite days...
I also took on the task of learning to kayak. With the help of some friends we met at the lagoon I was able to paddle myself somewhat akwardly around the lake. I wasn't the most talented of kayakers but I was able to hold my own. I had Jackie to cheer me on who prefferred to spend the day lying in the sun, and working on her burns.
Well we are now currently in the process of leaving Nicaragua behind us. One more night spent in a hotel in Manauga and we catch a 6am flight to Belize. We're hoping to soak up some more sun, before we have to head home to the dreaded ice and snow.
