Cape Reinga
From The Land of the Long White Cloud in Cape Reinga, New Zealand on Sep 21 '06
Day 1 - Up early again to begin the drive up north. We made it to Pahia today and managed to visit the historic town of Russel and see NZ's oldest church but it was only about 200 years old.
Day 2 - We visited Whaitangi and I remembered the wooden panelling of the visitors centre as we first arrived from 20 years earlier. Not much else though. We then continued to drive up the beautiful east coast to Kaitia.
Day 3 - The big trip to Cape Reinga. Basically we took the coach up to the northern most point of New Zealand. It was cool to see where the two oceans meet. Tasman and Pacific. Afterlunch we did a spot of sand dune toboggoning drove through a sinking sand creek and then drove along the Ninety Mile Beach which is actually only 90 KM!
Day 4 - We drove back south via Tane Mahutae the largest tree in New Zealand. It is a Kauri tree and it is estimated to be approximately 2000 years old. We arrived back at Bill and Judes exhausted!!
