Heraklion is the capital and economical centre of Crete region. It has a population of about 150,000 rendering it a good place to not just relax and enjoy the temperate Mediterranean climate but also get a your fair dose of shopping, excellent restaurants, cafes and bars and all the clubbing your heart can desire.

It is also home to the Minoan civilization which flourished here over 5000 years ago!!!  A Minoan palace, Knossos Palace, had been excavated and then reconstructed (the accuracy of the reconstruction remains debatable in the archeological world) in Knossos. The myth of the labyrinth, the Minotaur and the story of Daidalos and Ikaros are all linked to this site.

The town of Heraklion itself, brings to mind lazy summer days, white sands and smooth blue seas all accompanied by cups after cups of frappes (cold, blended insta-coffee). White washed square  homes covered in bougainvilleas and other shrubs. Olive and orange trees growing on side walks. There aren't many more pleasant ways of spending a vacation.
