Alajuela was a bit of a blur. We flew in late Christmas Eve, spent an hour or so at Thrifty rentals getting an SUV and then straight to the hotel where we collapsed exhausted from traveling all day. In the morning we were up early and on the road - excited to get to our first destination, Monteverde. I'd skip this entry entirely except I want to recommend Charlie's Place to travelers flying in and out of Juan Santamaria International airport. Alajuela is closer to the airport than going into San Jose and makes for an easier getaway in the morning if you are traveling to the Pacific coast, Monteverde or Nicoya Peninsula.
