If you want to really travel in luxury jump on an ETN bus ! Wow, these things are amazing.. only 24 passengers, more room than flying at the pointy end of the jumbo and movies, music and on time! All came crashing back to reality though when we arrived at the bus drop off station, which is outside the Guanajuato town. The problem was that we did not really know where our hotel was or how we should get there. First insight..Valenciana ( our hotel location ) is NOT in the town of Guanajuato, even though it is in Guanajuato, the State. Second insight.. dragging children and suitcases through the Guanajuato historic center working this out is'nt a great way to start your stay here..

As it turned out the hotel was a few k´s outside the town centre up a steep hill and we could travel in and out by crowded bus for about 25c each. The hotel was an ex time share resort and actually did have a record of our booking... which has not been our usual experience by the way. We had a dark, tired room to share between the 4 of us, but our 2 included continental breakfasts turned out to be 4 American breakfasts and there were sunny lawns and great views so we soon found the positives in our situation.

Guanajuato itself is a beautiful, historic town which is really interesting to explore and relax in. The centre has an amazing market building where we enjoyed Banana Smoothies and cake for lunch most days and there are several sunny plazas where you can just sit back and ¨be¨. Sandy found many stunning photographs here and we also enjoyed the shopping as this is an old mining town and the silver is very reasonably priced.

Once again we saw evidence of the tumultuous past of Mexico with the Alhondiga museum, the site where the heads of 4 Mexican revolutionary leaders had been hung on public display for 10 years by the displeased Spanish.

Our time in Guanajauto seemed to pass quickly. On the last evening the boys made friends with some Mexican children in the next room and we cheered an impromptu Australia vs Mexico soccer challenge. Taylor and Piper did us proud by the way .. with some able assistance from Sandy too!
