Marton, set in the heart of the Rangitikei Plains is about 25 minutes drive from Wanganui. An important railway junction it features tree lined avenues, gracefull parkland. It hosts some of the most exclusive boarding schools in the country. Many of the homes are in the post Edwardian era. Large gentlemens residences, some with a hint of Arts & Crafts style set in large grounds with mature trees and gardens. Some of the homes and gardens are open to the public for tours. Marton was named after Marton in England, birthplace of Capt Cook RN.

The nearby town of Bulls has retained it's frontier look and is in many ways the opposite to Marton. An important and very busy highway junction it sprawls across the highways. The town was named after a Mr Bull who amazingly did the wood panelling in the London House of Commons. The centre of a big dairying district it loves playing games with its name. "Milk Comes From Bulls" is always good for a laugh and all of the shops make some reference to the name. Even the public toilets are "Relievabull".
