Island Time
From Island Time in La Ceiba, Honduras on Mar 31 '04
We headed for the Caribean coast of Gutaemala, and shot across the border in the area they call the frontier. A small roadside shack was the immigration office. With the help of the minibus driver who pointed us where to go, we got stamped out and then drove through more farms of banana and palm trees and entered Honduras in likewise fashion. This day got us as far as Omoa, a tiny place on the coast that is home to a old large Spanish fort built to protect the gold shipments from British pirates. Early the next morning we walked up to the main road, to catch a passing bus to Le Cebia, our jumping off point for the Bay Islands.
For six days we hung out on the small islands of Pigeon amd Jewel, so small you could walk across from one end to the other in 10 minutes. It was quite, peaceful and a wonderful place to dive and chat with the people who lived there. On one dive we saw a Whale Shark, a huge character that eats plankton. The water was clear and inviting. We saw amazing colorful fish, corrals and Moray eels.
We left Utilia and started heading for the capital of Honduras, Tegus. Mostly what I see from the bus window are poor farms and people working hard on those farms to survive.
Arriving in Tegus, we landed a hostel in the heart of the city and found myself wishing for the quiet of the Bay Islands. The capital held little appeal for us, so we headed out for Nicaragua. Our time in Honduras was mostly spent on the islands. But we are darting away from the coast, because for Easter, all Honduriuns like to go to the coast, and it becomes crowded with party goers and loud music.
