Dinan
From Winter in NZ ... Summer in Europe! in Brittany, France on Aug 27 '06
Really looking forward to spending a couple of nights at a friends little place in france (being from NZ that sounds SOOO exotic) The plan if i make my standby flight is to get one of her friends who has his pilots licence to fly us over from London ... and since i am a little into my pilots licence (i mean a little - if you need someone to fly you in a nice level medium turn circle you need look no further!) i am likely to spend the whole flight bouncing on the chair with excitement "can i have a go, can i huh huh? can i Plllllleeease!"
But if i miss this bit of the holiday will have to go. Really want to see Mont St Michael.
Well here i am - 30th August and in Dinan. Arrived on Monday in St Malo - was supposed to ride the bikes the 20 miles to Dinan - but it was raining, the bags were heavy ,. and my bike had a slow puncture ... so we caught the bus! St Malo is beautiful - a walled town on the coast, filled with cobbled streets. We arrived at 8.30 and the bus left at 11am so walked through town and along the walls before having a very accomadating bus driver help us stow one bike under the bus and let us take the other on the bus with us. The countryside is full of stone houses, with pink and red flowers all over them, and fields of corn. We got off the bus at the village before Dinan and cycled down into the port where Jax's house is - what a great ride, all down hill ... even with the rain getting in my eyes! I will add details of Jax's house later - as she rents it out and everyone should come and stay!! We left the bikes at her house in the port and walked up the cobbled streets through the medieval walls into town. Didnt really get a chance to see much as jax needed to replace her eftpos card and we needed to pick up our rental car but I am going out to explore a bit more now. We then had an afternoon nana nap, before having dinner in the port, looking out over the half wooden houses and drinking the traditional cider - lovely!! Jax's house is right on the water, so woke up the next morning and looked out the window over the boats bobbing at the moorings... and the rain drops splattering in the river - great! I went for a walk along to the bakery and bought baggette and pan au chocalate - worth coming to France for! We drove down through brittany (will add more later - have only 12 minutes left!) for the whole day - saw standing stones, cathedrals and more cute little back roads and towns than i can count ... oh and about 200 round abouts - there are sooo many of them. Had dinner in the port again and then an early night. Today we drove along to the coast and walked along through the heather - in the blasing sun shine (finally!) Jax is off on a bike ride along the river and i am about to go for a walk round the town walls before we cycle along to a little village along the tow path for dinner. Tomorrow we are off to Mt St Michel and then on to Paris airport to fly to London ... and the day after - st petersberg!
