Bored at the Beach
From Southern Girl Travels the World in Sarande, Albania on Sep 14 '08
I am thankful that I took the route through central Albania. The slow rides afforded me the opportunity to see much of the mountainous vistas so prevalent in this country. Alabania's landscape is rocky and harsh but beautiful. Leaving Gjirokaster I headed south to Sarande, where the mountains abruptly meet the Meditteranean Sea. This city is the closest point to the Greek island of Corfu (25 minutes away), and has more sunny days than any other place in Albania.
I was sorely disappointed by my beachside retreat. It seems that the rain followed me down from the mountains. So much for sunny days! Resorts and casinos have been constructed all along the coast making it nearly impossible to get to the beach. Once able to descend to the sea, the beach is a rocky mess with trash strewn about. Even if there were sun I would rather not lay here. Maybe I will run over to Greece tomorrow.
