Having heard that buses left every half hour for the border, but that it took along time to get through, we left our hostel in San Jose at 8am and head to the bus station. We had planned for a late lunch on a Nicaraguan beach... 5 hours later, after lunch at the bus terminal, we were at the front of the queue. It transpired that we had ended up at the chicken bus terminal and stopped to pick every man, his brother and his chicken up en route!!
After a steady 6 hours we made it to the border only to find all the connecting buses had stopped. So we crossed the border on foot... and bartered for a taxi to Nicaragua's surfing paradise of San Juan Del Sur.

The travelling had all been worth it as San Juan was a pretty, small beach town with very friendly locals. The next day we decided to hire some bikes and explore the local beaches and coves. The guy who let them to us told us the nearest one was Madera... what he didn't say was that it was a 12km cylce there over hilly dirt tracks..... we have never been so pleased to see a beach! Having learnt from that we decided to take some surfing lessons and let them drive us to the beach. I think that between us we managed to catch a whole 4 waves but had an amazing time and promised we would go again the next day.

After a couple of days surfing we decided it was time to move on and head for Isla de Ometepe, an Island in Lake Nicaragua made of 2 volcanoes.
