EPIC! Part 1
From Music Is My Boyfriend in Kampala, Uganda on Feb 13 '09
WOAH! What a an epic week. In the manner of epic things, a la LOTR, original Indy, Star Wars, etc, am gonna have to write this in installments, partly coz I know that if I were someone reading this, and I were confronted with a BIG BLOCK OF TEXT I'd just be like... fuck it, no thanks.
RIGHT! Where to start? Wednesday night me and Sam went to Bubbles O'Leary, the Irish pub, to go see Baxmba Waves (the awesome band we saw last week with Fireman and Papa) again. BUBBLES IS SO COOL! All the barmen wear shirts saying 'Craic dealer', which is sooo weird on these black Ugandan guys. Surreeaaal. That was a really awesome night, I met some great people, Sam got with an underage girl (well, she keeps lying about her age, so we ASSUME she's underage. Sam was really happy coz she gave him a ring, but I had to burst his happy bubble, coz she told me that it was given to her by her ex... What a lovely girl.), a lovely prostitute came up to me and said 'You look so NICE and KIND, my brother would really like you!', I met an AWESOME super-hot Ugandan girl who has told me all the different best places to go every night (although I'm beginning to feel bad about going out slightly, coz apparently back at the house they have this running joke of 'Who's Carys? Do we know her?' coz they never see me...), also met a guy who thinks he's Superman and loves Avril Lavigne, to which I said 'Jokes, the only people I know who like Avril are lesbians', which was probably not the best thing to say considering homosexuality is illegal here... I bought cider (!!!!!) coz I saw they had a Bulmer's pump, but the pump turned out to be fake and the cider was twice the price of beer and half the size .... Great night! Got home very very pissed due to some random person who couldn't speak English buying me lots of drinks, whilst I talked to his awesome artist friend who COULD speak English. I only later realised just how drunk I was. I had looooads of drunken phone conversations that night at about 4 in the morning. At least, THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT! But when I woke up and checked my phone ... THOSE CALLS HADN'T HAPPENED! Crazy dreams. Very real and drunken. I dreamt I had a half hour convo with Julie in the room next door to me. Woopsy. I also was looking at my phone YESTERDAY and found FOUR texts from that night that I HAD NEVER READ! So sorry to anyone who I ignored... It wasn't my fault, I was TOTALLY drunk! And I woke up in the middle of the night, to find that my mosquito net was up, and went CRAZY thinking that someone had come into my bed and I started rolling around manically, before realising that I was probably just too drunk to bother pulling the mosquito net down. Woops.
People like this do NOT EXIST in England.
Thursday morning went to school EARLY for a jam session with a bunch of guys. At least, that's what I THOUGHT it was. TURNS OUT one of the guys had brought over someone who runs the club Kyoto, and it was sort of like an audition. And they landed the job, to play every Thursday there! AWESOME! Which I've been asked to do. This was a few days ago. Since then though the deal has fallen through, which is SAAAAD. But at least things are happening. One of the guys, Jero, was also shooting a hip-hop video, which I defs don't wanna see, coz I was looking RIDICULOUS on my d-bass, and was wearing my awesome Uganda pregnant dress. And his hip-hop mate was asking me whether I could help him write some hip-hop jazz fusion. Good times! My fingers are exploding all over the place from over-plucking and now they're just raw flesh with a couple of blisters. WOOP. Pleasant. One of the guys is an awesome guitarist with an afro of sorts, and reminds me of something out of the Harder They Come. SOOO COOL.
Playing music at the school is so cool, the atmosphere is amazing, with people just walking in, to listen, or join in, both teachers and students... It's fantastic. Am having issues with my students though, as people who are my Ugandan friends have started signing up for lessons... Which is just gonna be awkward, methinks! We'll see...
Had an excellent deep chat with my jazz flautist/saxophonist friend, Robert, who is JUST THE MOST ROMANTIC PERSON IN THE WORLD! He listens to podcasts on relationships and his pastor talks loads about love and women and stuff, and he just says things like 'If I were in a relationship that would be my LIFE I would treat my woman SO WELL because she would mean EVERYTHING to me'. Hence he doesn't have a relationship currently, because he's focusing on his music, and 'doesn't want to break any hearts'. But I was just thinking... shit. People like this do NOT EXIST in England. Siigh.
Met a lovely little five year old kid who is SO ADORABLE, named Gareth, and chatted to his mum loads. Turns out he's named after Gareth Gates. Seriously surreal... We went and saw Baxmba Waves AGAIN that night. I seriously know the whole of their set off by heart. This week am on the lookout for some new music scenes. Aces.
Got home at about 2 in the morning. Had to wake up at 6.30. Ouchies. Why did I have to wake up so early, I hear you ask? All will be revealed...
