Pompeii and Sketchy, Sketchy Naples
From Euorpe Trip 2007 in Naples, Italy on Jul 22 '07
We started off the day with a trip to Pompeii which was similar to Ostia Antica in Rome but still very cool because a lot of the buildings are much more intact. We saw theatres and roads with volcanic stones and the coolest part was seeing actual people on display who had been covered in volcanic ash. But boy was it hot!!!
And now for Naples. Well we knew we were in trouble when the ticket seller at Pompeii asked why we needed to get off at the stop near our hotel. When we finally arrived, we understood why. The area was the sketchiest we had ever seen. Looked like the slums and it probably was. There was garbage everywhere and the buildings looked like they had been abandoned. We arrived at our hotel after following some lady who spoke no english and her son (who persisted to stop at every single post we walked past and touch it; when he missed one, he had to run back and touch it). Our hotel was like a gem hidden amongst the crap buildings that surrounded it. It was brand new and seemed to not fit in at all. Our room was nice and definetly did what we needed it to do - give us a night's rest before a busy day of travel.
With no laundrymat in sight we headed into Naples center (which was not much prettier - kind of like the armpit city of Italy we would say) and found a laundrymat which turned out to be the cheapest so far (and they even did it for us). We had dinner at was supposed to be according to Lonely Planet - contender for the "Worlds best pizza" - but boy were they wrong. It was not bad but definetly no where near the best in the world (Jay doesnt think it is even the best in Dundas let alone the world). At the end of the meal, we wanted to tip the waiter so Janice went up to a guy to give him a tip and he was so excited, we couldnt figure out why. Turns out she gave the wrong guy the tip and all the waiters were laughing. We went back to the hotel (making sure we were back before dark) and had a very pleasant night in the hotel but very relieved to know we would be leaving the next day for Greece.
